This week's writing class took us a step further on the path of becoming expert writers and teachers of writing. So far on our journey we have encountered and discussed a wealth of helpful tools, critical to the betterment of our own, as well as the successful development of our students' writing. We've journeyed through, learning how to become expert writers in our classrooms -writing along with our students; reacquainting ourselves with the stages of the writing process and the six traits of writing; implementing and running a successful writer's workshop, and more recently (last week), we ventured into furthering our knowledge and skills in teaching different genres of writing, namely the descriptive genre.  This week, we explored yet another genre. This is one that I believe is  most basic and common to our primary grade students. It is one that they interact with in all reading assignments in their language arts classes and almost all other content areas across the

To another week of blogging. Boy do I have an exciting topic for you this week! but before I go into this week post let us recap what we have learned so far. For the past seven weeks I have been blogging about writing, writing and more writing. We have discussed that teachers need to become their own experts in writing in order to effectively teach writing, writing workshops this is where students are taught the writing process, the best practices for teaching writing, not forgetting the 6 + 1 traits if writing, this in my opinion the most effective tool in assessing students writing instead of using a rubric which only focus on students grammar and mechanics. The 6 +1 traits of writing focus on the way students use their word choice, organization, voice, convention, ideas, sentence fluency and presentation. we also touched on writing strategies (I think the name is self- explanatory) and descriptive writing where students need to make sure their writing include all five senses to enga

Am here this week to share with you another creative and enriching way in which we, as teachers, can promote  good writing skills in our students, to make the experience more exciting, more meaningful, more enjoyable and especially pain-free for them. Based on this week's very informative and interactive class sessions, our blog post this week will focus on one of the many types of writing that our students often engage in. It will also inform us as to how we could ensure they become competent in such writing task. This type of writing of which I speak is one that engages the use of the five senses, using sensory words to create in the reader's mind a clear and vivid image of the characters, objects, places, events, experiences and even feelings that he/she may be trying to portray. In other words, it gives detailed descriptions of whatever is being written about. Can you guess that which I speak of?    H

Writing Strategies

From the previous posts in this blog, we have spoken directly to how important it is to help our students develop their skills in writing. To recap, we mentioned writing along with our students, providing them with opportunities for daily practice, giving them their own writing choices, providing helpful feedback and instilling, nurturing and assessing good writing traits within their writing pieces, as some of the effective practices/ideas needed to aid this effort. Bearing in mind the importance of writing as a great communicative tool, these practices are vital to our students' writing success. We have also discussed engaging them in enriching writing workshops, through which we carefully guide and journey with them through the stages of the writing process, while incorporating the above aforementioned practices.  While we are all aware of what the stages of the writing process entails, ( prewriting, drafting,        revising, editing and publishing ), we must be reminded an

Writing Strategies Hey everybody 🙋 Let's talk about Writing Strategies Becoming strategic is an important characteristic of learning. Students learn all sorts of  cognitive strategies. Most cognitive strategies have direct application to writing, in this way students' growing awareness about thinking and their writing are mutually supportive. Here are some Writing Strategies Elaborating -  this where writers expand their ideas by adding more details . This strategy is most beneficial during drafting, when students are writing their ideas  and notice their writing lacks more details. Evaluating  -   writers review and evaluate their own writing by setting goals. During the writing process, writers review to see if it matches their intended meaning. Formatting - this is where writers design the layout of their final writing.  The writer may also include pictures to enhance the text, make sure the front is clear to read and highlights titles. Generating - this is where writers
