6 + 1 traits of writing

 


There are seven traits of a good author. They are the author’s: ideas, voice, vocabulary, organization, convention, sentence fluency, word choice and presentation. These traits can determine whether an individual is a good writer. It also, helps a writer to see where he/she can improve. In addition, it provides a guide for teaching, modelling, and assessing writing. Being able to focus on any element makes it easier for teachers and students. It makes it simpler to provide specific criticism of the students’ work.

Voice

The voice of author refers to their personal style. Its shows the writer connects with their audience. The interested level in the topic of choice. Every writer has to develop their own style. 

 

Sentence Fluency

Sentence fluency pertains to the rhythm and flow of the written word. It displays how the author can blend ideas together. Also, this is how the author sets the mood of the piece. It also deals with how the author transitions between one concept to the other.

 

Organization

Organization is key for structuring their work. Without structure the writing would be confusing for the readers. Organization of ideas is important for their writing flow from one idea to another. 

 

Word Choice

Word choice revolves around the author’s vocabulary. Words chosen by an author can convey mood, create setting, and get readers to connect with the manuscript. Also, certain words can be used to keep the readers interested. In the case of students they should try an implement new vocabulary within their work.


Conventions

This is the process of edit the manuscript for errors. These errors may include: syntax, grammar, punctuation, spelling, and capitalization. During this process the age and grade level of the student should be considered.

Ideas

The ideas are the actual concepts that are going to be expounded on whether in a story or expository. The ideas should be unambiguous, to the point and manageable. The writer should provide all the important details of the piece.

  2. These traits are indeed a good teaching and assessment tool. And use of this model truly makes it easier to give specific feedback on students work. I found it was very easy, given the practical experience we had with it in class.
